I am an artist and art educator working mainly in drawing media, watercolour and acrylics using the landscape as a source of inspiration for much of my painting. I originally studied Fine Art at university in the UK then trained to be an art teacher. I taught in a variety of schools around the world before moving to New Zealand in 2002 and for the last 6 years have made Manapouri my home.
On the Edge, painted on site from Kepler Farm at a point where the river bank falls away dramatically to reveal a raw view of the Waiau River and the Kepler Mountains. My aim was to work directly from the landscape to paint my immediate response to this vast wild part of Southland. This painting has been worked on over a period of 5 mornings throughout last November during which time the weather changed from extreme heat to snowfall and back to extreme heat again. I wanted to avoid the usual picturesque view of the Fiordland landscape that is so often seen in paintings and photographs so my painting appears rough and unfinished in comparison. At the moment I am experimenting with using acrylic paints thinned with water and medium to build my paintings up in a series of transparent washes and brush strokes.
